Miley Cyrus is six months sober—and she’s speaking out about the judgment she feels

Miley Cyrus has always been honest about her relationship with drugs and alcohol. Remember that 2017 Jimmy Fallon interview when Cyrus said she’s “always been very stoned”? The singer was formerly a big proponent for marijuana, but it sounds like she’s trying to put those days behind her. In an interview with Variety, Cyrus talked about the surgery that pushed her to become sober, and she revealed that she has stayed sober for the past six months—but it hasn’t been without challenges.

At the end of last year, Cyrus underwent an intense vocal cord surgery which prompted her to get sober so she could focus on her voice and music. “It’s been really important for me over the last year living a sober lifestyle, because I really wanted to polish up my craft,” she told Variety.

When journalist Marc Malkin asked Cyrus to elaborate on the “sober lifestyle” she referenced, the singer put an exact timeline to her sobriety.

“I’ve been sober sober for the past six months,” Cyrus said.

“At the beginning, it was just about this vocal surgery,” she said, but added that it has been a process of delving into herself and her family history to see sobriety as more than that: “I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges,” she said.

“So just going through that and asking, ‘Why am I the way that I am?’” Cyrus continued. “By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly. I think therapy is great.”

Although she seems content with her new lifestyle, as a 27-year-old—in Hollywood, no less—Cyrus has felt the challenges of people’s perception of sobriety.

“It’s really hard because especially being young, there’s that stigma of ‘you’re no fun.’ It’s like, ‘honey, you can call me a lot of things, but I know that I’m fun.’”

“The thing that I love about it is waking up 100%, 100% of the time,” Cyrus continued. “I don’t want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready.”

Cyrus has been vulnerable about mental health, especially during the past few months as she debuted her Instagram Live show Bright Minded. Her vulnerability surrounding addiction, substance abuse, and mental health matters is refreshing to hear—and for the record: We would never say Miley doesn’t seem fun.
